Higher gross pay is no solution; the tax rates would swallow it up, and the only effect would be to infuriate labor (for few workers understand the argument that income before taxes is not the income that counts).

提高薪水不能解决问题，因为高税率会吃掉加薪幅度，达到的唯一效果是激起员工的愤怒（因为没有几个员工明白税前收入其实不算真正的收入）。

But there must be better ways of doing the job than the bribe of delayed compensation — ways that stress the manager’s entrepreneurial function and reward him for his performance without making him a bondsman of the company.

但是除了用延期支付报酬来贿赂员工之外，一定还有更好的解决办法，既能强调管理者的企业家角色，奖励卓越的绩效，而又不会让管理者变成公司的奴隶。
